History and idea:
The idea was to build a village out of gingerbread. During the process it became clear how big the village actually was!
All objects were made with much love and imagination. The process was lots of fun and at the end all was put together. The inhabitants (of the real village) organised and engaged themselves independently to ensure that their individual habitats were copied as vividly as possible. The team spirit during the project was amazing and enhanced the entire village community. The entire family got involved and from baking the gingerbread with its enticing smell to constructing the various buildings and structures with skill and enthusiasm. Traditionally the building of a gingerbread house is part of the Christmas preparation ritual in Austria and fun for young and old.

In 1985 Spital am Pyhrn worked on a „snowman“ project. Even initially sceptical inhabitants were pulled into the enthusiasm of it all and in the end many snowmen and groups of snowmen stood everywhere – the project and the team spirit was the talk of the village for many years and brought the community much closer together.

In 2002 the idea of the gingerbread village was born. The head of the rock art museum agreed to contribute the space for the village. Both the tourism office as well as the municipality took up the idea and realised this great project in 2005!
