Benedict Trail from Spital am Pyhrn to St. Paul im Lavanttal
Going on a pilgrimage has become popular again! Some hike for mental and emotional balance, some want to test their physical limits and some go on a spiritual quest. The new pilgrim trail from Spital am Pyhrn in the Pyhrn-Priel Holiday Region and St. Paul im Lavanttal is named „Benedict Trail“ and is reminiscent of the procession of the Benedictine monchs, making their way from Spital am Pyhrn to their new place of work in Carinthia in 1809. A European exhibition took place on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the re-settlment of the Benedictine Monastery St. Paul, which was dissolved by Emperor Josef II in 1787.
Spital am Pyhrn situated at the Upper Austrian – Styrian border and St. Paul in Carinthia became popular again in 2009 in the eye of the Austrian pilgrime trails. The “Cathedral on Pyhrn”, the baroque collegiate church of Spital am Pyhrn and Admont with ist impressive Benedictine monastery are the ecclesiastical highlights along this newly appointed trail.
The trail is approximately 180 km long starting in Spital am Pyhrn and is structured in the following phases:
Phase 1: Spital - Admont Phase 2: Admont - Hohentauern Phase 3: St. Oswald - Seckau Phase 4: Seckau - Maria Buch Phase 5: Maria Buch - Bad St. Leonhard Phase 6: Bad St. Leonhard - Wolfsberg Phase 7: Wolfsberg - St. Paul Total Map
There are three Benedictine monasteries along the way - Admont, Seckau and St. Paul, functioning as spiritual stop-overs. Signposted in a unified manner, connected to and marketed as part of the network of pilgrim trails in Austria, Slowenia and Friaul, the Benedictine trail is set to spark also touristic interest.
Trail marking: the pilgrim trail is signposted throughout from Spital am Pyhrn to St. Paul by a logo.
