The Kalkalpen National Park situated in the Sengsengebirge and Reichraminger Hintergebirge mountain ranges is the largest protected forest area in Austria, covering 20.850 ha of land and reaching from 385 to nearly 2000 metres above sea level. Hidden gorges, untouched mountain streams, mountain peaks offering stunning views, natural forests and attractive pastures are the habitat of rare and endangered species, like the lynx, white-backed woodpecker, the alpine beetle as well as plants like the “Clusius” primula and the Cypripedium.
About 50 mammals and 80 breeding bird species, 1.400 types of butterflies and more than 1.000 flower variations, ferns and moss can be found in the national park.

If you want to get away from the noise of everyday life and embark on a discovery of hidden „treasures“, take a journey through the national park. The visitor’s centre of the Kalkalpen National Park is situated at the Wurbauerkogel in Windischgarsten and impresses with its unique panorama tower and the interesting exhibition "Fascination Rock". The 21 metre high tower offers breathtaking views onto the surrounding alpine panorama with a total of 21 mountain peaks reaching 2000 m of altitude: enjoy the view to the mountain ranges Totes Gebirge, Sengsengebierge and Hallermauern...
